Work Experience Can Lead to Construction Job Opportunities

During the summer many graduates will have been looking for construction job opportunities with varying degrees of success. It seems the way to get a foot in the door of the jobs market is to seek unpaid work experience, with a view to impressing an employer so much that they will invite you back permanently.

While the jobs situation in the UK has been improving of late, it is still fair to say that construction job opportunities do not grow on trees so it is important to seek every advantage possible. Working for no salary may not be very palatable at first, but the experience gained and the chance to shine is invaluable.

According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) a large number of graduates have found permanent employment in this fashion. In fact 21.7 percent of 2009 summer graduates who were in employment six months later had been recruited by an employer they had previously had work experience with.

There are advantages on both sides for the employer gets a young, enthusiastic but cheap resource to carry out duties. On the other hand the student gets valuable experience in a field that interests them and could lead to opportunities in the future.

Seeking work experience shouldn?t just apply to students in the summer as anyone unemployed for a lengthy period should consider this as an option. It shows employers your commitment and even if a vacancy isn?t immediately available it could lead to construction job opportunities in the near future.
