Using Contacts to Help Defeat Ageism and Land a Construction Manager Job
One of the great fears for older workers looking for a construction manager job or any roles in the industry is competing against not just younger people, but also perceived ageism in the UK. Therefore, government proposals to eliminate the retirement age will be welcome news as businesses will not be able to sack workers when they reach 65 years of age.
That said there will be circumstances when an employee?s age could prevent them from doing certain jobs such as manually intensive ones in the construction industry. Even workers in their late 40s and 50s though have to battle against ageism as they seek employment after being made redundant.
The key for anyone seeking a construction manager job for example, is to use their experience to their distinct advantage. Recruitment agencies like Humres do a great job finding vacancies for people, but the bottom line is it is down to the individual to demonstrate why they are the right person for the job.
It is important to use the many contacts built up over 20 or 30 years of experience in the construction industry. Attending industry events and business seminars is a great way to get together with existing contacts as well as making new ones.
Whether you are seeking a construction manager job or any type of role within the industry, it helps that people know you are available for work and can help to spread the word. Ageism does exist in the UK but most employers still value experience and in the end want the best person available to fill their vacancies.
