The Importance of Health and Safety on Site Construction Jobs
On site construction jobs experienced workers doubtless don?t give a second thought to their safety as they know their jobs inside out. Regulations also dictate that employers have a duty of care to the employees so the standards of safety are a lot greater than they were, say 20 years ago.
However, it is sometimes easy to scoff at health and safety regulations and think that the compensation culture has gone too far. We have all probably seen the adverts on TV where a woman slips on invisible water, breaks her finger nails and then gets a company to successfully win her a nice fat cheque.
Ok that is an exaggeration and health and safety does need to be taken very seriously, especially on site construction jobs. This was highlighted at the start of August when an architect firm had to pay a fine totalling ?180,000 and a construction firm ?143,000 after a worker fell to his death.
Sue Adsett of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) warned of the consequences construction firms face should they fail to comply with regulations. She said: ?HSE will not hesitate to take enforcement action against any company or individual who fails to carry out their health and safety duties, especially when that failure results in a tragedy.?
The onus is on employers to ensure that their workers are properly protected on site construction jobs. However, people applying for management and supervisory roles will also need to demonstrate an understanding of the rules.
In fact it is important that all workers are aware of the rules and regulations concerning health and safety. When interviewing for a job, that additional bit of knowledge may just be vital in swinging a decision in your favour.
