Technological innovation for jobs in mechanical engineering
19 January 2009

Structural design is an important aspect of jobs in mechanical engineering. From fundamental considerations on building practicality and project management, to improvements in insulation and selection of building services, every step of the construction process can benefit from a creative and pioneering approach.

Various new technologies have helped make Mechanical Engineering Jobs easier and safer. Particularly when buildings need to be protected against natural events, such as subsidence and seismic activity, one invaluable technology is that of linear motion guides, which were initially developed in Japan.

In jobs in mechanical engineering, linear motion guides are used to provide motion control for machinery and components. Increasingly, these adaptable and reliable mechanisms are applied to base-isolation units in order to dispel vibration from seismic events. Linear motion guides are typically constructed of rails and guide blocks on which materials or components are transported. Steel ball bearings are housed within the block and run along a groove in the rail. As a result, linear motion guides can be installed on level surfaces, vertical planes, inverted positions, slopes or walls. They move or position loads in machine tools in jobs in mechanical engineering where accuracy and reliability are crucial.

The technology of linear motion guides can be applied to prevention of earthquake damage and design of bridges and stadiums. In this regard, an important component of jobs in mechanical engineering is to control movements in buildings in order to protect their structures and enhance their functionality.
