Retail Construction Jobs Boosted by the Revival of New Shopping Centre in Leeds
20 August 2010
The prospect of retail construction jobs starting up again over the coming months is a positive sign for the British economy. Building and development programs have massive implications not only for the construction industry, but also for retail, tourism and many other industries.
The recession put many developments on hold as banks reigned back their lending and businesses in the private sector made drastic spending decisions. The public sector is now being hit by similar decisions having to be taken by the government, but it appears the private sector is fighting back.
For example, several new office developments are going ahead in London as well as hotels, which is great news for the construction industry. Hopefully now the recovery is spreading to retail construction jobs with the news that a new shopping centre is to be built in Leeds.
The 750,000 square foot Trinity Leeds shopping centre will cost around ?350 million and will create up to 1,000 retail construction jobs when work begins in August. Land Securities, Britain?s biggest listed owner of offices and retail properties, are pushing ahead with the project, which is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2013.
This is just part of a ?1 billion development program started by Land Securities so far this year allowing the company to take advantage of cheaper construction costs. If this trend continues with other developers looking to invest now, this could be great news for job seekers not only in the construction industry, but also in retailing.
