Professional Construction Jobs Drawing on the Talents of Draftsmen
There can be few industries where the skills are as varied as those needed for professional construction jobs in the UK. One of those skilled jobs in construction is that of draftsmen and women, who often work very closely with other engineers and technicians on important projects.
To become a good draftsman or woman there are various skills needed from the outset. These include being numerate, computer literate, good problem solving skills, the ability to communicate well and working in a team. As well as these skills a draftsman needs to understand the logic of engineering drawings and principles, know the qualities of various materials and understand construction methods and manufacturing processes.
As with many other professional construction jobs in this country, there are various training courses available for aspiring draftsmen and women. Studies at college will lead to a minimum of NVQ/SVQ level 3 as well as BTEC NC / D, SQA NC group award, City and Guilds Certificate or vocational A level / GSVQ level III.
Many of the skills are also learned on the job with junior draftsmen working on technical drawings for small sections of a project. Draftsmen are usually based in a design or drawing office operating a computer-aided design (CAD) system.
Professional construction jobs such as working as a draftsman or woman require a lot of hard work and dedication. However, they offer a fantastic career with technology changes providing new and exciting challenges all the time.
