Prior Work Experience Offers a Greater Chance of Landing Graduate Construction Jobs
It has been well documented that these are tough times in the UK especially for those leaving school or university, so is it feasible to find graduate construction jobs in the current climate? Well the good news is that graduates are in high demand with construction employers.
Most employers accept applications from graduates throughout the year via a structured process, although some also operate an annual recruitment process with fixed deadlines. Whilst the intake may not be a good as in previous years due to the recession, there is still a demand for highly motivated graduates.
As is the case for anyone applying for a new post, having skills or qualifications that stand out from the competition is vitally important. When applying for graduate construction jobs, being able to show an employer that you have had experience working in the sector will be a big plus.
This may seem difficult for if you have been studying at university and wish to apply for graduate construction jobs, how can you get experience beforehand? The answer is to go looking for work experience during a sandwich year or by seeking help from your careers service.
Internships offer a great chance to get a taste of what working in the construction industry is like as well. Such options should not be discounted because of the lack of pay as the experience is invaluable. Taking the initiative to get this experience will show employers a willingness to work and learn, and will provide a good stepping stone towards a career in construction.
