Preparation Needed to Fill a Quantity Surveyor Vacancy
04 June 2010

When an employer seeks to fill a quantity surveyor vacancy there are certain skills they will be looking for in their candidates. Some skills come naturally to people whereas others have to be learnt and developed through experience.

Given the skills required by quantity surveyors they are always in demand, even in periods of slow activity, as seen in the construction industry over the last two years. However, candidates should remember that having the relevant qualification does not automatically entitle them to fill a quantity surveyor vacancy.

There are many instances in all industries, not just construction, where candidates have become complacent and believe they just need to turn up to an interview to get the job. It is important to be prepared at all times with an up to date CV, which is factually accurate and has been checked thoroughly for spelling and grammatical errors.

Even if people are not necessarily looking for a new position, it doesn?t do any harm to keep a CV up to date as there is no knowing when an interesting opportunity may arise. Candidates looking out for a quantity surveyor vacancy should also keep themselves in touch with developments within the construction industry by reading industry related magazines and journals.

Clearly having experience in relevant jobs and a good reference from previous employers is important too, as it shows any prospective employer what you have achieved. However, to stand out from the crowd an impressive interview is vital.

A smart appearance and having relevant questions prepared for any interview goes without saying. Prepare thoroughly before the interview as it will make it easier. It will help demonstrate good communication skills and industry knowledge in a confident manner to impress the interviewer.
