Olympics Could Be Boost for Long Term Construction Jobs

Olympics Could Be Boost for Long Term Construction Jobs

Whilst the 2012 Olympic Games are providing a great short-term boost to construction jobs in the UK, the event should become a springboard for launching young people into construction jobs.

That is the view of Tom Hadley, director of policy and professional services at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC). Mr Hadley has also urged employers to take on British staff for these jobs, rather than using imported labour.

Employers urged to give construction jobs to Brits

Talking about the possibility of employers hiring overseas workers for their construction jobs, Mr Hadley said: "The Olympics project must make sure that doesn't happen across the board through the procurement process and supply chain.

"One of the clear aims of any supplier to the Olympics is to make sure that they in some way tap into the local recruitment agenda."

Boost for long term construction jobs

Mr Hadley also believes that job opportunities created by the games are not just short-term, but offer experience and training for young people to remain in construction jobs. With a large amount of work needing to be carried out, many positions will be created, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has stated.

Skilled professionals are needed in the run-up to the Games, and, as such, encourages "those outside of the jobs market to get the right training - and subsequently to get the right experience - that will put them in good stead, even when the project finishes", Mr Hadley suggested.

Rather than viewing construction jobs temporary jobs, he believes that it could persuade individuals to train up and make a long-term career out of it.
