New Amazon Centre in Scotland to Create 750 Logistics Jobs
Online retailer Amazon is one of the internet’s success stories. And, to cope with increased demand for its range of goods, the retailer is set to open a new distribution centre in Scotland. The centre in Dunfermline will be over 90,000 square meters in size and will create 750 jobs.
Largest hub in Scotland
The new distribution centre is to be situated alongside the M90 and A92 motorways in the Scottish town. At 92,903 square metres, the centre will be equivalent in size to 14 football pitches and will pack and ship Amazon goods including books, DVDs and electronic goods all over the UK, Europe and worldwide. 750 logistics jobs will be created.
In addition to the new centre, there will be 200 new jobs at Amazon's existing facility in Gourock. Existing staff at the online retailer’s facility in Glenrothes, which was bought by Fife Council last summer, will move to the new centre in Dunfermline.
Amazon also expects to create a further 1,500 temporary jobs during peak periods.
Largest Amazon warehouse in Britain
Building work on Amazon’s new facility has already begun and the centre is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year. Recruiting for the logistics jobs is likely to begin towards the autumn of 2011.
The new warehouse will be the largest in Scotland and Amazon’s largest in Britain. Amazon’s current flagship facility outside Swansea is the size of 10 football pitches whilst the existing warehouse in Gourock covers the area of four pitches.
