Making energy efficiency even more efficient
01 December 2008

In response to global warming and other consequences of climate change, demand for high-efficiency condensing boilers has increased considerably in this country in recent years. However, in order to maximise efficiencies, installers and specifiers alike need to take into account more factors than simply upgrading to a high-efficiency boiler.

When selecting and specifying heating equipment, it is important to keep in mind that cutting-edge condensing technology may not be immediately compatible with existing commercial and industrial heating systems. However, if a high-efficiency condensing boiler is desired, then installers and specifiers need to consider other issues such as flue terminal position, changes in the water distribution characteristics, and controls. The existing heating systems may also require cleansing and other special treatments.

Specifically, it is essential to ensure that existing flues are suitable for teaming up with a high-efficiency boiler. This is because older flues may not be impervious to the acidic nature of the flue gases and the high level of condensate that condensing boilers produce within the flue systems.

Furthermore, controls play a significant role in achieving maximum efficiency. When a high-efficiency boiler is operated and managed properly, its performance can be enhanced by up to 10 percent when compared to boilers without appropriate controls.

Finally, it is vital to remember that a condensing boilers only provides its highest efficiency when the system return is below 50°C. Unless this requirement is met in the system design parameters, the boiler will not necessarily deliver the required benefits.
