M&E jobs: art galleries
25 May 2009

Those with M&E contracting jobs would tell you that each new-build or refurbishment project has its unique aesthetic and practical requirements. In order to meet the specific demands of each client, these professionals constantly familiarise themselves with not only everything in their own fields but also a little bit of something in every other discipline. Their ultimate goal is to provide products and services in all M&E contracting jobs that are able to reflect the distinctive tastes and standards of their clients.

Take the Whitechapel Gallery in London?s East End as an example. Elegantly contrasting against various kebab shops and phone-unlocking stores along the lengthy Whitechapel High Street, the gallery boasts a recent expansion that has successfully doubled its space. The broad walls are now featuring a series of masterpieces created by contemporary UK and international artists. Also included in the gallery?s new complex are a cafeteria and brasserie, as well as other purpose-built educational spaces.

Those with Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Jobs adopted a minimalist approach in refurbishing the gallery?s interior, keeping it modest enough to help focusing the visitor?s attention on the art exhibits. Each one of the numerous mechanical and electrical services is so excellently concealed from sight, that visually the gallery may be misunderstood as a building with no modern facilities at all. For instance, it is almost impossible to believe that within the gallery?s fine walls are shallow and narrow cupboards containing specially designed and manufactured vertical air-handling units.

Indeed, in the joking words of those with M&E jobs in this project: ?We had this big Victorian building into which we were bringing 21st-century services -- kicking and screaming.??? Everything had to be compact in size, carefully installed somewhere beyond the common imagination, or expertly squeezed through tiny holes on the walls and floors. A broad range of cutting-edge yet pocket-sized security and fire protection systems were mounted in secret locations to guard the precious art works that are wroth more than the building housing them.

Still, those with M&E jobs completed their tasks. Such exciting challenges are what make M&E contrasting jobs interesting and worthy of pursuing.
