Looking for a Job? Careers in Project and Site Management Might be the Answer
23 December 2009
It is always worth evaluating the type of skills you have when looking for a new job. Careers can be mapped out through an early recognition of what training is required to achieve your goals.
For people working in the construction industry there are many ways of progressing through the ranks and with the right ambition and drive, workers can earn a high ranking position and salary. Some might assume that the position of a site manager might take many years to work up to, but this is not necessarily the case.
Recent graduates moving in to the construction industry are unlikely to jump straight into a site management job. Careers in site management can come to fruition a lot sooner than was once the case though, as many firms are being forced in to promoting graduates earlier.
However, there are still stepping stones in the path towards any site management job. Careers start with graduates learning the ropes through site engineering roles, before they progress to contracts management or project management.
Of course it is important that a building site manager has the appropriate skills to warrant progressing through the ranks in this field. The Chartered Institute of Building does offer opportunities to gain qualifications that will provide the skills and guidance for trainee and practising site managers.
The job can provide good rewards and a sense of fulfilment though, and requires dealing with other key players in construction projects. As with any management role it also requires a great deal of responsibility in overseeing projects, but this should not faze any ambitious graduates looking to work as site managers.
