Jobs in the Construction Industry Get a Second Wind
20 October 2010
The creation of jobs in the construction industry is very much reliant upon investment in building new and improved housing, public services and transport links amongst other things. However, with public service cuts in the UK looming some of the investment in the private sector has an uncertain future.
The news is not all doom and gloom though as there are positive signs that the private sector is picking up and there is also a commitment to develop sustainable energy sources. For example, in September the world?s largest offshore wind farm was opened off the Kent coast.
On and off shore wind farms is something the government is seemingly very keen to promote and secure private investment for. Winds farms and other sustainable energy sources are just one area that could help to produce jobs in the construction industry over the next few years.
Even now in 2010 the UK has the most number of offshore wind farms in the world. To some they are an eyesore, while to others they are a necessary alternative way to generate power. The wind farm off the Kent coast is large but will be nothing compared to the proposed development here, with the 100 turbines in 2010 to be increased to 341 over a four year period.
Additional projects off the coasts of Cumbria, Norfolk and Suffolk as well as in Liverpool Bay have been given the go ahead. Projects like these require the cooperation of both the government and private firms to help generate jobs in the construction industry, and it seems there is an appetite on both sides to do this.
