JIB calls for Further Education Fund applications
03 November 2008
The Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry (JIB) was set up in 1968. Its main functions are to regulate the relations between employers and employees engaged in the electrical contracting industry, and to provide all kinds of benefits for all individuals concerned in order to stimulate and further enhance the industry’s progress.
JIB is now inviting applications for this year’s Further Education Fund, which provides financial assistance to those who wish to undertake further education or training in subjects related to the electrical contracting industry. Examples of grants previously awarded include courses and instruction in building services engineering, electrical and/or electronic engineering, process technology and CAD.
Take CAD, or computer-aided design. The term refers to the use of computer technology to assist the design and drafting of entire buildings, from small residential units (such as houses) to the largest commercial and industrial structures (such as hospitals and factories). Using three-dimensional models and two-dimensional drawings, a CAD draughtsman is capable of carrying out conceptual design and layout of a building, conducting strength and dynamic analysis of its composition, and defining the construction methods of its components. Because CAD operators can develop their works on screen, print them out and save them for future editing, project costs may be considerably reduced and design cycles greatly shortened.
Once an application meets the criteria and is successfully accepted, the JIB will fund 50 percent of the fees for courses such as CAD to a maximum of £500. Individuals within the electrical contracting industry are encouraged to apply for funding to help develop their skills.
