Finding jobs in quantity surveying
22 December 2008

Jobs in quantity surveying (QS) – also known as cost engineer, construction economist or building estimator – are for individuals with excellent analytical and logical skills. Not only should they be able to work accurately with figures, but they should also possess superior oral and written communication skills and willingness to work both independently and as a team member.

The most important personal attribute is perhaps the ability to concentrate for long periods. This is because jobs in quantity surveying require detailed studies of drawings, sketches and specifications prepared by architects and engineers. In order to accurately measure the types, amounts and costs of all components needed in a construction project – such as skills, labor, materials and plant – those with jobs in quantity surveying use a wide range of management procedures and technical tools to prepare the “bills of quantities????. These documents serve as benchmarks against which changes of design and their effects on construction costs are assessed.

Those with jobs in quantity surveying frequently communicate with architects, engineers, builders, contractors, suppliers and project owners, in order to manage construction costs and administer contracts at all levels. In addition to preparing monthly cash-flow forecasts and tax depreciation schedules for clients, they also undertake feasibility studies to assist in decisions about the worth of each project proceeding.

Indeed, those with jobs in quantity surveying not only work in offices, but also visit building sites, clients and other members of construction teams. Highly experienced quantity surveyors even act as consultants to business and government.
