Electrical Engineering ? Salary Range and Job Entry Requirements
24 September 2009

A general idea regarding the range of salaries offered and job entry requirements can go a long way in helping an electrical engineering graduate fresh out of college decide what to expect when he starts on the all important job hunt.
Salary Range-
A fresh graduate in electrical engineering can expect a starting salary from ? 20,000 to ? 27,000. An electrical engineer with an experience of 10-15 years in the industry commands a salary in the range of ? 40,000-45,000 +, depending upon bonuses and perks such as accommodation, company car etc. which may be included in the remuneration package. A chartered engineer can get up to ? 65,000+, depending on his previous job profile and experience.
Salaries may vary considerably according to location, size and type of the company, nature of the job etc.
Job Entry Requirements-
A degree in electrical engineering or electronics engineering is a prerequisite to gain entry in this industry. However, graduates from other related engineering fields such as mechanical, production, aeronautical, building services, computer and software engineering may also be considered for Electrical Engineering Jobs depending on the job profile.
Entry may also be possible with HNDs in electrical or electronics engineering or HNDs in other related engineering fields.
However, it should be noted that most employers prefer to hire graduates. Diploma holders seeking to gain entry into the highly competitive electrical engineering industry would do well to gain relevant work experience by taking up a vacation job to be seriously considered for good jobs.
BEng graduates need to complete their masters in engineering to qualify for Chartered Engineer status.
Some other vital qualities that employers look for while selecting the right candidate are-
? Enthusiasm, flair for his subject and a will to learn.
? Good communication skills, both oral as well as written.
? Knowledge about the sector and a keenness to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field.
? Good organisational skills
? Good interpersonal skills along with an ability to work well in a team.
