Co-Op Set To Create 900 Logistics Jobs At New Distribution Centre
Retail giant the Co-Operative Group looks set to create 900 logistics jobs in the East Midlands with the opening of a huge new distribution centre in the region. The Nottingham Post reports that the company is thought to be close to signing a deal for 500,000 square feet of space at Castlewood, near Junction 28 of the M1.
Plan to create 900 logistics jobs in the region
Whilst the company refused to confirm the deal, a spokesperson for the Co-Op said: “In January the Co-Operative Group announced plans for a new distribution site in the North Midlands, to serve its food stores in the region, a part of a complete overhaul of its logistics network.
“No decision has yet been made on a location for the new facility, but it is likely to be close to the M1 in either Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire, and will provide jobs for around 900 people.”
Facility will replace smaller Co-Op centres
If the planned development goes ahead it would replace two smaller Co-Op facilities in the area and be operational by 2012.
The Co-Op Spokesperson added: “The new regional distribution centre is expected to become operational during 2012, and will replace two existing smaller depots operated by the Co-Operative Group at Venture Way in Alfreton and at Freeston Drive, Bulwell, in Nottingham.”
FHP have marketed the Castlewood site which seems to be the perfect fit for the Co-Op’s demands. With 900 logistics jobs likely to be created, an announcement on the location of the new site is expected in the next few months.
