Construction starts on iconic new London building
Construction jobs were given a boost this week as the building work finally began on what could become one of London’s most iconic buildings. Construction jobs and skilled positions were taken up this week as construction on the ‘Walkie Talkie’ building commenced in earnest.
Fenchurch Street development under way
The ‘Walkie Talkie’ will stand at 20 Fenchurch Street, London and has received much publicity thanks to its innovative design. Designer Rafael Viñoly came up with the idea for the 37-storey building which will offer stunning 360° views of the capital - as well as featuring a relaxing ‘sky garden’ on the roof. It is expected to be completed in February 2012.
Robert Noel, the managing director of Land Securities London, is excited that the construction is finally under way. "In January 2010, we were the first property company to commit to starting major developments in London in this cycle, as we saw a supply constrained market evolving for prime office space between 2012 and 2014," Noel told Property Week.
"In starting work on 20 Fenchurch Street with the Canary Wharf Group today, we begin an exciting journey that will bring together our complementary skills in development, leasing and construction to create a new landmark for London."
Canary Wharf's chief executive, George Iacobescu, agrees: "We are delighted to be able to apply our extensive high rise experience to such an iconic development. We look forward to working alongside Land Securities on this exciting project, which will be yet another step forward for London's economy."
