Building and Surveying Jobs on Track with Network Rail Investment
27 November 2009
British commuters often complain about the punctuality of trains and rises in fares each year. The perception is the annual increase to travelling expenses doesn?t see much improvement to the efficiency of the railway network or comfort of the journeys.
Many bad travelling experiences tend to stick in the mind more than the good ones or when we get from A to B with no frills and spills. In fact work on our rail tracks, trains and stations is an ongoing process with Network Rail announcing significant investment over the next five years.
The rail company stated in November that they will spend ?3.25 billion during that period with improvements being made across the country. This will include new passenger information systems, new lifts and stairways, toilets, waiting rooms and shelters, as well expansions to platforms and ticket offices and lighting and security upgrades.
This could signal (no pun intended) the start of a few opportunities for workers seeking a building role or a perhaps a surveying job. Networks Rail is expected to carry out a review over the next three months to establish which areas are in need of improvement first.
Anyone seeking a building or surveying job may be advised to keep a keen eye on what is being done on not just the railways but all of Britain?s transport system. Whilst the whole country will see improvements, it seems that the stations likely to get the biggest investment will be three in the capital ? London Bridge, Blackfriars and Kings Cross as well as Birmingham New Street and Edinburgh Waverley.
