Balfour Beatty Starts Work On New Permanent Bridge For Olympic Park26 June 2008
Balfour Beatty started off the foundation work of new permanent bridge in the centre of Olympic Park by pouring 290 cubic meters of concrete. The 23 meters long steel beams will be lifted and placed to form the deck, once the foundation and abutments in are in place.
The bridge is expected to be operational for construction traffic by November and will span over the Carpenters Road linking north and south of the site. The structure will become part of the Central Pedestrian concourse during the games and afterwards.
Balfour Beatty will begin work on the huge land bridge which will act as a gateway to games, connecting Stratford International and Stratford Regional Station to Olympic Park. This will form part of the roof of Aquatic Centre and is part of the Balfour Beatty’s Aquatic Centre contract.
Olympic Park, in the past, suffered from poor connectivity with the local communities as it comprises of fragmented pockets of land. The project includes more than 30 bridges and over 20 kilometers of roads to be constructed in and around the Olympic park. Abutment work on the Stratford side of the bridge was completed last year.
Contract for maintenance and construction works on highways within the Olympic park was awarded to alliance of Fitzpatrick Contractors Ltd and Mott MacDonald. Mott MacDonald will work as Key supply Chain partner in the alliance.
